Web design services: Web Standards
Lektriq designs websites to recognised industry standards
Web design services: Web standards
‘Web standards’ are guidelines formulated by the W3C, the organisation who create many of the standards that drive the Web. These cover a wide range of Web technologies, and provide us with well-defined best practices so we can ensure our work is of the highest possible quality.
Surprisingly, many websites are not built to the rigourous standards required by the W3C. Many websites are built on years of compatibility ‘hacks’, a lot of this code now presents problems with modern browsers and sites can be complicated to update and maintain. The problems created by using ‘old school’ techniques to build websites become particularly evident when maintaining large websites.
Web standards – logical development
Using Web standards we can now create websites without all the hacks we used to need to get websites to work in all the major browsers. Web standards allow us to stop relying on the undocumented behaviours and non-standard uses that have blighted the Web design industry for so long.
Less is more
The modular coding style encouraged by Web standards means we don’t have to spend so much time writing front-end code. Sites built with Web standards can see the amount of code needed to build their front-end reduced significantly. Less time writing trivial code means more time dealing with real problems.
Easier to maintain
Using Web standards, websites are faster and easier to maintain and update than ever before. We can now edit the look and behaviour of a whole site, in one go, just by editing central documents – keeping consistent style and branding across websites has never been easier.
Faster to browse
Browsers store our external styles and scripts, so that users only have to download these documents on their first page view, speeding up page load times considerably.
