Web design services: Accessibility
We can make sure that your site is accessible to the widest possible audience
Web design services: Accessibility
With the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 coming into force in 1999 and the publishing of the Code of Practice - Rights of Access Goods, Facilities, Services and premises in 2002 it is now a legal requirement to ensure your website is accessible to the disabled.
Most websites are failing
According to the Disability Rights Commission’s Formal investigation report: web accessibility (2004) which investigated 1,000 websites, over 80% of those were inaccessible. Of the remaining accessible websites, most were only accessible at the most basic level.
With such poor practice predominant in the industry it gives us the opportunity to be market leaders.
An ageing population – accessibility is not just about a minority
With 18.6% of people in the UK aged over 65 in 2004 it has never been more important to ensure your website is accessible. A significant portion of the public do not have perfect vision, hearing or are physically restricted. Besides the legal requirements it is simply sound business sense to open your website up to this massive market.
How to ensure your website is accessible
To help web developers build sites that are accessible to people with disabilities the W3C (the Web’s de-facto governing body) has provided the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, also known as the WCAG. We use the WCAG as a guide in the design of all our websites, and our sites are at minimum WAI Level A conformant.
