Technical information about the design of the Lektriq website.

This page provides technical information on how this site was built and the technologies we have used.
Browser support
This website has been tested in and fully supports the following browsers:
- Apple Safari 2.0.4
- Mozilla Firefox 1.5/2.0
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7.0
- Opera 9.02
MODx
This website was built using MODx, an Open Source PHP/MySQL-based Content Management Framework.
MODx first attracted us because the setup encourages good markup practices – something of a rarity in content management solutions. MODx now it has a place in our hearts for being one of the fastest, easiest and most flexible ways to
bang out
craft a dynamic, content-managed website.
Web Standards
Writing code in accordance with the recommendations of the W3C (the closest thing there is to an industry standard on the Web) is, quite simply, the right thing to do. We use the standards because we have standards.
For those not involved with web development; it is one of the only technical professions where it is actually the norm to work in a non-standard way. Standards are useful to us as they provide us with a means to get reliable, predictable results when building websites.
HTML
The Lektriq site is built using HTML 4.01 Strict. The site simply doesn’t need XHTML. We say don’t use XHTML unless you know what it means and actually need it’s features. Implementing XHTML has many attendant problems, particularly the fact that around 85% of the world’s browsers don’t support it yet.
CSS
Style sheets are great! Print designers have known this for years, but 10 years after CSS 2 was introduced, there are still many who haven’t cottoned on to what is quite simply the right way to style your web documents.
All styling on this (and all other) Lektriq websites is created using CSS only. This means that our sites are easier and faster to build and maintain than all those old-school sites out there.
Accessibility
Lektriq is committed to building websites that are as accessible to the widest range of users possible. This site aims for conformance to Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. That probably means nothing to 99% of the world, so a few of the major points are listed below:
- We have provided text equivalents for images whenever relevant to the user. We have not used images as a substitute for text, but as an enhancement to it.
- Documents are constructed so that they are easy to navigate, with correct use of headings. The Lektriq site makes just as much sense if you remove the styling.
- This site works properly, even if you have JavaScript turned off or your browser does not support it.
- We haven’t assumed that you are using a mouse to navigate the site.
- Links are clearly marked and have title text added so you know what they do.
- There are navigational aids including the ‘skip navigation’ link at the start of all documents and the ‘back to top’ link in the foot of every document.
- There is a site map to easily find any document on the site, as well as a search facility.
Privacy
We think that privacy is really important, so— we created a whole page for it!
